The Speechwriter will support the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM) and Global Defense Reform Program (GDRP) through external communications, encompassing public affairs, media relations, public outreach, and Congressional engagement. Position will provide support for shaping the Bureau’s public and Congressional messaging, and for engaging with external counterparts to implement the Bureau’s strategic communications strategy.



  • Speechwriting (65%): Drafts and clears public remarks for the Assistant Secretary and other Senior Bureau or Department officials that communicate Bureau policies, plans, programs and objectives to a diverse set of audiences ranging
  • Content Generation (30%): Working with subject matter experts across the Bureau and Department to draft a steady stream of media content, such as blogposts, fact sheets and editorials; content should clearly and concisely explain the goals, objectives, outputs and outcomes of PM Bureau programs to a wide audience in a manner that is engaging and informative
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Secret Security Clearance required
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Requires familiarity with U.S. foreign policy, political military affairs and current Administration objectives/policies
  • Ability to work on multiple issue areas and projects concurrently
  • Good interpersonal communications and teamwork
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite


  • One (1) year of experience in foreign policy, media monitoring and analysis or communications
  • Graduate Degree in related field, such as International Relations, Politics or Communications
  • Published writing in old or new media
