This week, the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its call to the UN to lift sanctions against Hizb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. The request follows a peace accord signed by President Ashraf Ghani and Hekmatyar in late September. Meanwhile, the U.S. Army will deploy armor and aviation brigades totaling about 2,300 soldiers to Afghanistan this winter as Afghan forces struggle to contain a Taliban resurgence.
