Algerian authorities this week have stepped up military operations in the eastern and southern borders, especially at the frontier with Libya, in an effort to prevent incursions by militant groups. According to a security source, the Egyptian air strikes on the northeastern Libyan city of Derna have led dozens of pro-al Qaeda and Islamic State groups to head towards the southwestern Libyan desert. On 29 May, a family was attacked in the city of Ghat, near the Algerian border, by what appeared to be Islamic insurgents.
