The United Nations called on Algeria to put an end to its crackdown on undocumented immigrants and deportations. Hassen Kacimi, a senior official at Algeria’s Interior Ministry, responded by claiming that Algeria called for assistance from the international community, while the United Nations had done little to protect the migrants. UN spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a UN briefing in Geneva that deportations and expulsions have increased markedly since the second half of 2017, and that a UN human rights team was this month sent to Niger to investigate.

During Ramadan, there was a higher number of road accidents and casualties, largely due to tiredness and speeding. 1,136 road traffic accidents claimed 31 lives nationwide in just four days.
