During the period March-April 2017, the Americas region experienced a further increase in the number
of foreign nationals targeted in kidnapping events across the continent, recording a 30% rise
in figures compared to the first two months of 2017. The increase in attacks over the end of
Q1 2017 was principally led by events in Colombia, where the formal peace accord between
the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has
exacerbated a growth in criminality by militant groups.
