ASIA

India (Security threat level – 3): On 4 August 2022, the chief of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced that SpiceJet Ltd will be allowed to gradually reinstate passenger flights once the airline addresses the DGCA’s flight safety concerns amid an ongoing probe into the airline’s operations. On 27 July DGCA authorities ordered SpiceJet to reduce its operations to no more than 50% of scheduled flights for eight weeks due to aircraft safety and financial management concerns with the airline. According to aviation authorities, SpiceJet is only able to operate at 50% of its capacity without jeopardizing passenger safety.

South Korea / Taiwan (Security threat levels – 2 / 1): On 4 August 2022, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines announced the cancellation of commercial passenger flights between the cities of Incheon, South Korea, and Taipei, Taiwan, amid China’s ongoing live-fire military drills in the Taiwan Strait and the waters surrounding Taiwan. Korean Air canceled flights from 5-6 August, while Asiana Airlines canceled all direct flights to Taiwan on 5 August.. The Chinese military is expected to conclude its ongoing live-fire exercises on 8 August.

MIDDLE EAST

Israel (Security threat level – 4): At approximately 1600 local time (1300 UTC) on 5 August 2022, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted airstrikes against targets allegedly linked to the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip. The IDF stated that the airstrikes were part of “Operation Dawn Rising” against Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The IDF also declared a “special situation” in Israeli territory situated within 80 km (50 mi) of the Gaza Strip, which includes Tel Aviv. Details on the declaration are expected to be revealed in the coming hours, but the IDF has warned residents within the 80 km-radius to be alert for possible retaliatory rocket fire emanating from the Gaza Strip. Road closures are in place in locations across southern Israel. Operations at Ben Gurion Airport (LLBG/TLV) are currently continuing as normal. The airstrikes followed threats issued by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad against Israel, following a 1 August arrest of one of its senior leaders in the West Bank.

NORTH AMERICA

United States (Security threat level – 2): At approximately 1615 local time (2115 UTC) on 4 August 2022, a gunman opened fire at a store inside Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota — located approximately 15 km (10 mi) south of downtown Minneapolis — causing panic among people in the shopping complex. The incident occurred at the Nike store situated on the second level of the mall’s northwestern section, following an altercation between two groups. No one was injured in the incident. Authorities placed the mall on lockdown for approximately two hours after the shooting. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

SOUTHEAST ASIA

Thailand (Security threat level – 3): At approximately 0100 (0600 UTC) on 5 August 2022, a large fire broke out at the Mountain B pub in the southern Sattahip township in Chon Buri province, located approximately 130 km (80 mi) southeast of Bangkok. Eyewitnesses inside the venue reported hearing two loud explosions followed by a fire that started on the roof. Approximately 100 people were inside the building when the fire started. Emergency services dispatched 20 firetrucks to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings in the area. At least 14 people were killed in the blaze and 38 others suffered varying degrees of injuries. According to local authorities, the pub was permitted to operate as a nightclub. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

GOVERNMENT WARNINGS

Iraq (Security threat level – 5): On 4 August 2022, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a Demonstration Alert regarding an upcoming large-scale gathering in Baghdad’s International Zone, which reads in part as follows. “Recent demonstrations within and around the International Zone disrupted transit routes and local services. Additional large gatherings are planned for Friday, August 5. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.”
