Honduras (Security threat level – 4) : On 2 October 2021, a large fire destroyed multiple buildings on Guanaja, one of the three principal islands of Honduras’ Bay Islands. The blaze, which began at approximately 0300 local time (0900 UTC), burned for several hours before the Honduran air force extinguished it by 1300 local time. Authorities report that three people were injured, and more than 400 residents evacuated. Additionally, more than 200 residences and businesses were destroyed or damaged. Guanaja Airport (MHNJ/GJA) has been closed to commercial flights until further notice, and as of 4 October commercial operations have not resumed. The cause of the fire has yet to be reported.
Afghanistan (Security threat level – 5): On 3 October 2021, a bomb detonated outside the entrance of the Eidgah Mosque in the capital Kabul amid a memorial service for the mother of a Taliban spokesman. Authorities did not provide details regarding the type of bomb that caused the explosion. According to reports, at least five people were killed, and at least 20 others were injured in the blast. Taliban forces cordoned off the area following the attack. A Taliban spokesperson stated that three suspects have been arrested. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack; however, the Islamic State militant group has carried out similar attacks against the Taliban in the past.
Italy (Security threat level – 3): On 3 October 2021, a small Pilatus PC-12 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Milan Linate Airport (LIML/LIN) into a vacant two-story office building under construction in the town of Donato Milanese, located approximately 12 km (8 mi) south of the city of Milan. The aircraft was traveling to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (LIEO/OLB) on the island of Sardinia. The crash caused significant structural damage to the office building and set fire to several vehicles parked nearby. All eight people onboard the aircraft were killed, including six passengers and two crew. Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Oman (Security threat level – 2): As of 1730 UTC on 3 October 2021, Tropical Cyclone Shaheen — which has been downgraded to a tropical depression — was located approximately 400 km (250 mi) north-northwest of Masirah Island and was moving west-southwest at 13 kph (8 mph), according to the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center. At that time, Shaheen was generating maximum sustained winds of 75 kph, with higher gusts. On its current forecast path, the storm is expected to continue moving west-southwest through 4 October, while weakening as it tracks over land before dissipating.
The storm passed near the capital Muscat on 3 October, during which time Shaheen had sustained winds of between 120 and 150 kph (75-93 mph). According to authorities in Oman, the storm generated waves of up to 10 m (32 ft). The storm also produced up to 500 mm (20 in) of rain in some areas, raising the risk of flash floods. The Omani Ministry of Social Development on 3 October issued a stay-at-home order, with an exception for emergencies, until 10 October, and set up 80 shelters throughout Oman to aid residents affected by Tropical Cyclone Shaheen. The storm killed at least 10 people during 3-4 October, according to authorities in Oman.
Zambia (Security threat level – 3): On 1 October 2021, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health announced that all coronavirus-related restrictions have been rescinded. Restaurants, bars and places of worship are now allowed to operate without restrictions on capacity or hours of operation. Protocols regarding social distancing, mask-wearing, and the disinfection of public spaces remain in place.
Haiti (Security threat level – 4): On 1 October 2021, the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince issued a Demonstration Alert, which reads in part as follows: “Several transport and textile unions have called for a national strike on Monday, October 4, 2021. Please avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant as civil actions of this sort, while largely peaceful, can become unpredictable.”
Poland (Security threat level – 2): On 1 October 2021, the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw issued a Demonstration Alert regarding protests planned for 2 and 4 October, which reads in part as follows: “Separate demonstrations are expected to occur in Warsaw on Saturday, October 2, 2021 and Monday, October 4, 2021.
“On Saturday, October 2 a political demonstration regarding opposition to Sanitary Segregation Bill #1449 is scheduled between 12PM and 3PM. Officials are expecting up to 150 participants. The police do not expect violence, but some traffic congestion is expected. Participants plan to gather on Plac Zamkowy and walk along Krakowskie Przedmiescie, Nowy Swiat, Plac Trzech Krzyzy, Aleje Ujazdowskie, Matejki, and Wiejska to the Sejm.
“On Monday, October 4 a demonstration, march, and rallies regarding “World Animal Day” are planned. Officials expect up to 600 registered participants. The demonstration, march, and rallies are scheduled between 4PM and 8PM. The police do not expect violence, but significant traffic congestion is expected. Participants plan to gather at Plac Trzech Krzyzy. From there they will walk along Zurawia and Parkingowa to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, located at 30 Wspólna St., to stage a rally. Later, they will continue along Krucza, Zurawia, Plac Trzech Krzyzy, Aleje Ujazdowskie, Matejki, and Wiejska to the Sejm, where they plan to stage another rally.”
