KIDNAP + RANSOM INSIGHT GLOBAL SUMMARY: SEPTEMBER 2016 REPORT
26-Sep-16

Check out Olive Group’s latest Kidnap for Ransom Insight Report. Our September 2016 issue covers global kidnapping incidents, trends and K&R hotspots at the regional, national and provincial level over the months of July and August of this year. In this issue, we bring insight into the kidnap threat in East Africa, in particular in South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Mozambique and Madagascar, assessed to be the primary kidnap for ransom hotspots in the region. Under-development, worsening economic conditions and corruption are the common factors behind the high levels of criminality in these countries, which directly contribute to the kidnapping threat. In addition, armed conflict and Islamic extremism have accounted for a recent surge in reported abductions across the region. Whilst local nationals account for the majority of victims, an elevated threat to expatriate personnel has also emerged in recent years, with foreign nationals regarded by threat actors as higher-value targets.
